Portugal, a country lying along the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, was once continental Europe’s greatest power. Portugal shares commonalities - geographic and cultural - with the countries of both Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. Its cold, rocky northern coast and mountainous interior are sparsely settled, scenic, and wild, while the country’s south, the Algarve, is warm and fertile. The rugged Estrela Mountains (Serra da Estrela, or “Star Mountain Range”), which lie between the Tagus and Mondego rivers, contain the highest point of mainland Portugal.

The Portuguese national basketball team represents Portugal in international competitions and is governed by the Portuguese Basketball Federation. The team has participated in European Championship qualification tournaments and other international competitions as it continues to develop its presence on the European basketball stage. Notable Portuguese players include Neemias Queta, the first Portuguese-born player to win an NBA championship, as well as Ticha Penicheiro, one of Portugal's most accomplished basketball players internationally.
Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From the imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary, and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.
The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars, and restaurants.
